The Chinese Zodiac is calculated using the Lunar Calendar! Take a birth date like February 3, 2024. Under the Gregorian system, that’s still the Year of the Tiger. But the key date in the Chinese system is Lichun (Start of Spring), which fell on February 4th that year. This means someone born on February 3rd is actually a Rabbit; only those born after Lichun are the Dragon. That’s why you can't use the Gregorian date—you have to check the Lunar Calendar date to get the true Zodiac sign.

Personality Traits of the Twelve Chinese Zodiac Animals

By observing the characteristics and nature of the Zodiac animals, we summarize a representative meaning for each sign. This is used to analyze an individual's personality traits and predict their fortune trends.
For example: The Rat symbolizes wisdom and agility. The Tiger stands for power and adventure. The Dragon signifies authority and mystery. The Snake represents intelligence and calmness. The Horse symbolizes vitality and competition. The Goat stands for gentleness and compassion. The Rooster represents loyalty and integrity. The Pig represents tolerance and optimism.

The Zodiac, Traditional Customs: Ben Ming Nian, Tai Sui, and Adjusting Fortune

In traditional Chinese culture, the concepts of Ben Ming Nian (Zodiac Year), Tai Sui (Jupiter God), and Fortune Adjustment are tightly connected. They show respect for natural cycles and embody the wisdom of seeking good fortune while avoiding disaster.

Ben Ming Nian refers to the year whose Zodiac animal matches your birth sign, cycling every 12 years (e.g., 2020 and 2032 are Rat years). Tradition holds that this year is a "turning point" in life, potentially bringing challenges or volatility that need to be resolved through specific customs.

Tai Sui originates from ancient astronomy. It personifies Jupiter (the Year Star) and is seen as the deity managing human luck and misfortune. A different Tai Sui deity guards the year each year. Anyone whose birth sign clashes with the current year’s sign is said to be "offending Tai Sui" .

Fortune Adjustment offers personalized advice based on each sign's predicted luck. For example, a Rat might be advised to place dragon-shaped items to boost fortune, while an Ox might benefit from interacting with objects related to home and family to enhance blessings.

Mythology: The Embryonic Zodiac in Creation Stories

Among the many origin myths, the story of the Jade Emperor choosing the animals is the most famous. Legend says that in ancient times, the Emperor needed a system to track time and record years. He decided to select twelve animals as representatives. He announced a contest: animals must come to the Heavenly Court on a set day. The first twelve to arrive would earn the honor.

When the news spread, the animals eagerly responded. The clever Rat hitched a ride on the Ox and jumped off first, taking the lead. The Ox followed, showing patience and hard work. One by one, the rest of the animals arrived, each with their unique traits, completing the order and forming the Chinese zodiac.

This fantastical story gives the Zodiac animals vivid characters. It also reflects ancient people’s keen observation of animals and their rich imagination.
