If you’ve already explored the ancient city walls and imperial tombs of Xi’an and want a completely different kind of experience, then Yucha Grand Canyon should be at the top of your list.

Hidden deep within the Loess Plateau of northern Shaanxi, this stunning geological wonder is often called the “Chinese Antelope Canyon.” Over millions of years, earthquakes, wind, and rain carved the red sandstone into flowing wave-like cliffs. At noon, magical beams of sunlight shine through the narrow canyon cracks, creating dreamlike light and shadow effects that completely change people’s impression of northern Shaanxi as “just yellow earth.”

Today, Yucha Grand Canyon has become one of the most breathtaking natural attractions near Xi’an and a perfect escape for travelers seeking both adventure and peace.

1. A Geological Wonderland Shaped Over Millions of Years

Yucha Grand Canyon is located in Yucha Village, Xiasiwan Town, Ganquan County, near Yan’an. Although administratively part of Yan’an, it is only about 3.5 to 4 hours by car from Xi’an, making it an excellent one-day or two-day trip destination.

The canyon was formed after powerful earthquakes split the Loess Plateau millions of years ago. Over time, rainwater and natural erosion slowly shaped the hard red sandstone into smooth curved walls with flowing textures that resemble silk ribbons or fingerprints left by the earth itself.

As a national 4A scenic area, the canyon’s biggest highlight is the combination of Danxia landforms and incredible light effects. Compared with Arizona’s Antelope Canyon, Yucha Grand Canyon feels wilder and more vibrant. Green plants cover the canyon top year-round, while moss grows along the moist rock walls. The contrast between orange-red sandstone and green moss creates a unique natural color palette.

When sunlight enters the narrow cracks at midday, beams of light move across the canyon walls, creating a beautiful Tyndall effect. The canyon instantly transforms into layers of gold, orange, red, and deep green. Even simple phone photos look cinematic without filters.

Unlike many mountain destinations, Yucha Grand Canyon does not require difficult climbing or exhausting hiking. Walking through the canyon feels like entering a quiet natural tunnel. Towering cliffs rise on both sides, and in some places the passage is so narrow that only one person can pass sideways. The sound of flowing water, soft wind, and footsteps on wet moss creates a peaceful atmosphere far away from city noise.

This mix of healing calmness and natural power is what makes Yucha Grand Canyon truly unforgettable.

It is best to arrive before 10:00 AM to avoid tour group crowds.

9:00–10:30 AM: Longba Valley — Quiet and Wild

Start with Longba Valley, the most natural and gentle canyon route among the four main valleys.

Morning sunlight is softer here, creating darker cinematic photography tones while the canyon remains peaceful and uncrowded.

11:00 AM–1:00 PM: Huashu Valley — The Most Famous Light Beams

Huashu Valley is the highlight of Yucha Grand Canyon and a paradise for photographers.

The canyon is about 800 meters long, and the narrowest section is only 0.3 meters wide. The sandstone walls curve like flowing silk with incredibly smooth wave patterns.

At noon, sunlight shines directly into the canyon cracks, creating the canyon’s famous Tyndall light beams. Orange, gold, and green colors move across the rock walls, producing some of the most spectacular natural light effects in China.

Almost every photo here looks like a wallpaper.

Note: Tripods are not allowed inside Huashu Valley to protect the fragile canyon walls.

1:30–3:00 PM: Mudan Valley and One-Line Sky

Mudan Valley is smaller, quieter, and covered with green moss. In May, visitors may even see wild peonies blooming nearby.

The softer afternoon light makes this area perfect for portrait photography.

Nearby, One-Line Sky is formed by twisted rock layers that create an extremely narrow canyon gap. Looking upward, visitors can only see a thin line of sky overhead, creating a dramatic and almost surreal atmosphere.

3:00–4:00 PM: Return Trip

Take the sightseeing bus back to the visitor center before driving or carpooling back to Xi’an.

The entire route is relaxing and efficient, allowing visitors to enjoy the canyon’s best scenery while avoiding the busiest crowds.
